On-Site Tests
for Shellfish Biotoxins
Our next-generation diagnostic tests get you lab-quality detection of harmful algal bloom (HAB) toxins without the lab, simple to use and trusted by professionals.
Advancing food safety and protecting public health by enabling faster, easier, and more reliable detection of life-threatening shellfish contamination caused by harmful algal blooms.
Toxin Alert
The Toxin Alert line delivers the power of a lab directly to your operation. We provide portable, powerful tools for the on-site detection of harmful marine biotoxins in shellfish.
Our test empowers regulators, harvesters, and seafood producers to monitor their products confidently and take immediate action to ensure public health and safety.
SensoRead
Portable Reader
One device for all kits. Semi-quantitative reads, lab or field.
PSP Alert Test
Saxitoxin on-site screening to detect fish and shellfish contamination, calibrated to official PSP safety thresholds.
ASP Alert Test
Domoic acid on-site detection to prevent Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning risks.
DSP Alert Test
Okadaic acid rapid on-site screening to prevent Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning risks.
What you need to know
Performance
Test accuracy
All tests are validated for sensitivity and specificity per target analyte, with rigorous quality control. Accuracy may vary by matrix — contact us to review data for your application.
Speed
Results in 45–60 minutes
Most tests return results within 45–60 minutes. The SensoRead reader supports parallel sample processing for higher throughput workflows.
Compatibility
Supported shellfish species
Validated for mussels, clams, oysters, geoduck, and more. Custom-validated solutions are available for unique or local species on request.
Protocol
How to use the kit
Each kit includes a full protocol from sample prep to reader operation. Scientist-led training and guidance are available to ensure confidence with the process.
Instrumentation
How the readers work
Readers detect color changes and report multi-threshold qualitative results — beyond a simple positive/negative. Two models available: SensoRead Mini (portable, PSP-focused) and SensoRead (high-throughput, all three major toxins).
Storage
12-month shelf life
Most products are stable for 12 months under recommended storage conditions. Shelf life may vary by test — refer to product documentation for specifics.
Health alert
PSP symptoms
Paralytic shellfish poisoning causes tingling, numbness in limbs, and breathing difficulty. Produced by harmful algal blooms, these neurotoxins can be life-threatening if not detected before consumption.
Scope
Toxins, not allergens
These tests detect marine biotoxins from harmful algae — not shellfish allergens. Allergic reactions are immune responses to shellfish proteins, which is a distinct and unrelated mechanism.
Research support
Grant application assistance
Our scientists can provide validation data, technical language, and supporting documentation to strengthen grant applications. Contact us directly to discuss your project.
Global
International availability
Products ship worldwide, with support for international documentation, regulatory requirements, and logistics. Available across Canada, the US, and regions affected by red tide and harmful algal blooms.
Rapid tests for Shellfish Biotoxins: Evaluating the Toxin Alert Platform on Multiple Shellfish Species
Consumption of PSP, ASP, and DSP toxins in shellfish can cause serious neurological and gastrointestinal illness, posing significant risks to public health and the aquaculture industry. Toxin Alert kits provide a rapid, cost-effective, and easy-to-use solution for on-site detection of these toxins.
